Get A Seattle Psychologist To Help You Get Your Life Back On Track

By Della Monroe

Life in this modern age is certainly much more stressful than it used to be. Nothing is simple any longer and competition is fierce. Everybody seems to race from one thing to the next and it comes at no surprise that the number of people struggling to cope with all these demands are steadily rising. Many people become disheartened, questioning the meaning of life. Some develop mild or even serious psychological disorders. Thankfully, a Seattle psychologist can help such people to regain focus and live life fully again.

Therapy can certainly help but one of the main obstacles remain the fact that psychological treatment is still viewed with mistrust and even scorn. It is often seen as a bogus discipline and those seeking help from therapists are dismissed as weaklings that cannot cope with reality. This is hogwash, of course, but until attitudes change there will be many people who need help that will not get it.

Psychologists are not medical doctors. They are specialists in diagnosing and treating psychological conditions. The therapist acts as counsellor and his main role is to help his patient to discover the underlying reasons for his condition and to devise solutions. In many cases a medical intervention is also necessary. In such cases the patient will also be treated by a psychiatrist who can prescribe medication.

Patients sometimes have unrealistic expectations from their therapist. They expect the therapist to solve their problems and tell them what to do to overcome their conditions. This cannot be done and should not be expected. The therapist can merely act as a counsellor, helping the patient to devise plans and methods to cope with life and to function normally within society. The patient himself must make decisions and implement changes in his life.

Many therapists conduct group sessions. Each group consist of patients that all suffer from a similar condition or malady. Not only are group sessions more affordable for the patients but they can benefit from interaction with each other. Patients in group therapy learn that they are not alone and that they are not the exception to the rule. Patients can learn from each other and they can encourage each other.

Psychological treatment can only be beneficial if the patient accepts the fact that he has a problem and if he actively cooperates in the treatment process. This can cause problems, especially when a person desperately in need of help refuse it whilst causing havoc and hurt for his loved ones. In some extreme cases a court may order a person to be forcibly restrained in a treatment facility, but then it is almost always done to protect innocent bystanders.

Successful therapy requires a relationship of utter trust between the patient and the therapist. If such a relationship proves to be impossible no progress will be made and it will be better for the patient to consult another therapist. Therapists are realistic and often convince their patients that they will benefit from rather seeing another professional.

Psychological therapy is not a bogus science and it is not mysterious. The human mind is extremely complex and there are numerous things that can go wrong. Much progress has been made in this field and in most cases there is no longer a need to suffer in silence. Seeking help can result in a better quality of life.
