People who have malignancy are not only surviving but living longer. This is a new development than it was about 20 years ago. Some time back it was known that cancer had no treatment. That is not the case in this century. Medical advances have led to the development of advancements in Oncology. They have made malignancy manageable than it was coupled with counseling to cope with cancer.

Despite the medical advances, a diagnosis of malignancy can be really threatening. Many people upon diagnosis feel tormented and live in a state of denial. The purpose of counseling is to offer a remedy to the mental health of the patients. Some take it as a life sentence and lose hope. By offering counseling sessions the patients can learn to cope with this disease.

Patients need to know the stage of diagnosis of their disease. It is through the therapist that they get an explanation of the diagnosis and what it has in store for them. Anxiety affects most patients as they struggle to bear with the situation. This is because the disease has been branded to be a killer disease that had no cure. It is at this point that a therapist is needed to help patients understand the disease and how best to cope.

The structure of the healthcare system is also an issue to be addressed. Most patients do not understand the healthcare system and how to access treatment. Therapists have the role of assisting the patients to understand the medical system and how to access cancer therapy. Through the help of a therapist, the struggles and stress are reduced.

The psychotherapists help restore hope through encouragement after diagnosis. Malignancy can easily place patients in states of hopelessness. Some do not fully recover even after being healed due to the trauma of the disease. They even think this disease may recur. The therapist has the duty of assisting the victims fully recover and continue with their normal way of life.

A counselor has benefits to the entire family of the patient. They are generally subjected to anger, stress, and sadness due to the illness of one of their members. They are not able to believe that such a thing has befallen one of their own. The therapist has the role of making them understand the causes of the certain disease and have a better a better know-how of its treatment. This way they are better placed to take care of their loved ones.

The counselors help patients accommodate the unexpected changes from their day to day life as a result of the disease. At particular stages, patients may be required to undergo surgery losing affected organs in order to survive. In some cases, loss of hair is observed. Losing organs can be traumatic to the patient. A therapist is thus required to explain the essence of losing such organs and how to adjust to the new changes.

Finances are also worrying when it comes to cancer patients. The treatment malignancy patients needs are usually very expensive and often than not, the patients are not able to afford them. These situations can be really stressful for the patient. They are guided on how best to utilize the available resources by their therapists.
