The Steps On Cleaning A Faux Sheepskin Rug

By Robert Turner

Other common term for a sheepskin is lambskin. Lambskin is the hide of a sheep. This material is not like the common leather types which are tanned with some fleece intact like pelts. A lot of manufacturers have been using these materials for their products like hats, baby and invalid rugs, clothing, slippers, automotive seat covers, covering, footstools, pelts, and gloves.

A wool or a fleece can be considered as hypoallergenic according to many medical professions. Sheepskins are considered as insulators themselves and that is why, they have the ability of drawing the perspiration away from wearers to fibers. In the history, a faux sheepskin rug and also sheepskin boots, vests, and coats are very common to people. Here are them following steps to clean these items properly and maintain their quality.

Filling the tub with a tepid warm water and adding an appropriate powder or liquid solution for the type of material. And since you are having the fleece or wool material, make sure that you are using a delicate wool solution by adding only a small amount of it. In this way, you can maintain the quality of the wool because you are not washing it with a solution that can possibly damage it.

Using hot water in washing would be fine. However, using this excessively may bring unnecessary disadvantages. Some disadvantages include resulting to a difficult rinsing process, the leather becomes damaged and shrunk, the colors may possibly fade, the wool piles may felt, and there maybe some dirt and stains and it maybe hard to remove them.

When washing the item, it is recommended to make use of the woolskin conditioner and shampoo and not wool detergents. The detergents usually contain bleach, phosphoric acid, alkali, peroxide, enzymes, phosphates, triethanolamine, chelating and sequestering agents. All these chemicals can possibly harm the leather, thus, avoid the use of these.

Place the rug into the tub fleece in a side down position. Make sure to immerse it fully in the warm water. Similar to washing any other clothing, you may leave the rug and soak it in the water with solution in order for the dirt to be removed by the delicate wash and in order for the smell to stick on it. Thus, there is no need for you to really scrub it which can be one of the causes for it to be worn out and damaged.

Then after, wash it very gently with your hands. If you can still see some dirt or stain, avoid rubbing or brushing it to avoid damage. After all the stains are removed, wash and rinse the item using fresh warm water and continue washing until the water becomes clear and no bubbles are left.

After all the processes, the sheepskin must be drained first before removing it from tub. And using a comb, comb the fur very gently in order to return its softness when dried. Combing can prevent it from having small that would look ugly. An important reminder is to avoid brushing harshly for the prevention of falling down. And also, comb it in only one direction.

Lay the item down to dry it up in a side down position. This may also be hung to drip dry it, but you need to make sure that hanging it must be away from sunlight heat because excess heat can make the wool become damaged. Drying it using the dryer may also be done by setting the cycle to either fluff or gentle only.
