What You Need To Know About Lilikoi Jelly

By Stella Gay

Many of us possess that insatiable sweet tooth that demands sugar. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are not complete without the addition of something savory. Jams, marmalade, and jellies are often a welcome addition to any meal. Although traditional flavors may be satisfactory, there comes a time when the sweet tooth craves something different. This is where lilikoi jelly comes in.

You are probably asking yourself what exactly is lilikoi; after all its not a mainstream fruit. Well, you are right. This fruit grows predominantly on the islands of Hawaii, and can be considered a tropical fruit as it needs high moisture content, warm temperatures, and fertile ground. This uncommon fruit does not look like something you would normally eat as it possesses yellow cratered skin and tends to be a small in size. Inside it has a creamy yellow skin with dark seeds.

Normally it is not eaten raw as the flavor can be a bit much. People who bite into its flesh will pucker up as the flavor is both intensely sweet and sour. It can be considered extreme in taste. For that reason many prefer it cooked up in a tasty dessert, or transformed into a delicious jelly.

This fruit contains nearly half of our daily vitamin C requirement as well as nearly a quarter of the daily amount of needed vitamin A. Throw in ten grams of fiber, and you have a healthy food that will make your taste buds sing. It does possess large amounts of sugar, which is why this fruit is so popular for jelly making.

There are many great ways to incorporate this jelly into your daily diet. It can be used in sandwiches, experimented with in recipes, or simply be enjoyed straight out of the jar. Here are just a couple ideas.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are the staple in mainstream diets. It can be considered a comfort food. Yet, after years of the same blackberry, blueberry, or strawberry flavors, the sandwich may become a dull lunch option. This is where lilikoi steps in. It will liven up bored taste buds, and may encourage individuals to try new flavor combinations.

Another idea is to incorporate lilikoi into a gift. This makes for a unique house warming present, or it can be used to create a tropical birthday basket for that person who has it all. Simply pair this jelly with Hawaiian foods such as chocolate covered macadamia nuts. Next, throw in some coconut rum or tropical Margarita mix for an exotic and fun gift anyone will enjoy. After all, who can say no to a slice of the tropics.

The combination of tangy and sweet is what gives this jelly a unique taste that is both addictive and fun to experiment with. It can be added to sauces, sandwiches, or eaten by itself. Regardless of how it is used, this fruit will liven up any meal, and bring home a little bit of Hawaii.
