An Overview Of Volunteers In Agricultural Education And Outreach

By Ruthie Calderon

When professionals want to teach others about how important farming is near San Francisco, they will want to look for some ways to go about the task. With volunteers in agricultural education and outreach, men and women can quickly learn about the field. As long as each and every volunteer has a working knowledge of the industry, they should be able to get the job done.

When people are first becoming familiar with agriculture and how it works, they will of course want to become intimately knowledgeable of growing seasons. Some crops, especially citrus fruit trees and related plants, will only do well in hotter climates. Spinach and lettuce, on the other hand, will be right at home in colder climates where the growing season is a bit shorter than average.

Irrigation methods are a good field to learn about. If volunteers are going to be working with farmers to increase crop yield, they will of course need to provide some irrigation pointers. Whole networks of pipes can be constructed so that certain plants can receive the water they need whenever the weather turns dry for a few weeks or months at a time.

The right tools and equipment will also need to be learned about. Harvesters and tractors, for example, will be crucial during the summer and fall. Tractors can drag plows that will turn over the soil before the actual seeds are planted. All farm machinery that is kept in superb shape will remain viable for many more years down the road.

Deciding on a budget will also be important. Volunteers can help fledgling farmers understand the difference between their expenses and their income. As long as farm owners keep track of their financial situation as they move through the growing seasons, nothing will be left to chance. These books can be examined in detail during certain months to determine where some fat might ultimately be trimmed from the process.

Making small presentations at local gardening shows can be great way to give back to the community. In fact, agricultural expositions are commonly held all over the nation. Many of these shows will offer people the chance to taste freshly picked fruits and vegetables. Understanding how farms produce food is a good way to get people interested in the industry.

People should also be passionate about their work as volunteers. This means that they should be willing to do some research so that they can come out on top. Reading agricultural manuals that have been produced by various farming organization is an excellent start for most men and women.

In the end, learning about agricultural outreach is important. Individuals who put in the time will do very well for themselves. They can influence and others of similar mindsets and help to bring farming into the lives of local residents of all kinds.
