Useful Memory Activities For Seniors

By Paul Edwards

As we grow older, one of the major challenges that we are all faced with is the issue of memory loss. While it may just be a subtle problem in some, it is a lot bigger in many others. The reason for amnesia is the shrinkage of the brain tissue which occurs almost invariably in most seniors. The most affected component of Memory loss is the short term rather than the long term. In the modern world, where passwords and PINs protect vital information, this presents a major challenge. Fortunately there are many memory activities for seniors to engage in.

One of the age old solutions to the problem is involvement of an individual in solving puzzles. This exercise has been shown to be effective in the young and old. Of most benefit are crossword puzzles that may involve the use of numbers or words. Most of these puzzles to do require a lot of intelligence and are simply solved by applying simple logic reasoning.

Sensory stimulation is the engagement of the major senses. It involves using all the senses regularly to ensure that they remain sensitive to stimuli over time. The exercise also serves to preserve important neural connections needed for recall. To preserve the sense of hearing, for instance, one needs to keep listening to beautiful music regularly. The sense of taste can be maintained by tasting delicious foods.

Board games are also an important training tool. The most common types include chess and checkers. Apart from enhancing recall ability, the games also keep cognitive ability intact. The reason for this is that players have to anticipate moves likely to be made by their opponents if they are to win. Many of these games have been developed into android applications making them readily available.

Simple as it sounds, regular reading is an important exercise for enhancing memory. It is especially useful for what is referred to as word recall. Materials that may be read are many and varied. Historical information than the senior is familiar with is likely to be more useful as it will help trigger memories of what they have always known. Frequency of reading rather than volumes read should be emphasized.

Learning on a continuous basis is healthy for the brain. Seniors should make sure that they expose themselves to new knowledge and skills. Learning something new is both exciting and challenging. One has to actively remember new information which is important in keeping the memory intact. Some of the new skills will include, for example, learning new musical instruments, learning new recipes and even new languages.

Physical health directly effects mental health. It is for this reason that one needs to ensure that they exercise in a regular basis. Recommended physical exercises for seniors include cycling, brisk walking and jogging. Each of these exercises ensures that the blood supply to the brain is increased and this influences the overall well being of the organ. A healthy diet is equally important.

Memory loss is a common problem among many seniors. The severity does vary from one individual to another and the problem may be compounded by neurological conditions such as Alzheimer disease. Remaining active is the secret to delaying amnesia in old age. The activities mentioned here are just but a few suggestions on what one can do.
