By Charles Jones

Plants are like newborn babies who need special care and attention. Some of them could be so frail but really beautiful that extra effort is also given to make sure that they will grow properly. Ginger lilies are one of these plants that is raised not only for its simple appearance, but for the astounding scent it produces.

If you want to plant something that will add aesthetic quality to your garden, this surely will be the answer to your needs. It is so easy to propagate and you can do it basically where there is a soil for it to grow on. You would even be deceived by its early appearance as a young rhizome because it closely resembles the ginger plant.

There are varieties of these plants that have flowers ranging from orange colored to white ones, while some also have leaves looking like the ginger and others like a banana. The plants produce flowers generously throughout the year, generally soaking the air with its sweet, gingerly like smell while others may produce a scent which is a cross of jasmine and honeysuckle. Once they are fully grown, they do not use up much space as they grow upright from all sides.

There are different varieties of this plant, and the most popular is the one that blooms a butterfly shaped flower. As its name implies, what even makes this variety one of a kind is the scent it emits, which is often described between that of honeysuckle and gardenia. Having this in your garden certainly will make your place the most relaxing area ever in the house.

An area with a full blast from the sunlight may be good for the plant to grow, but they nourish well in a partially shaded one. However, if you do the former, be sure to transfer it away from hot afternoons since intense heat tends to curl the leaves up. Be meticulous when you plant them outside of a pot by providing a makeshift shade just enough to cover it.

First classified as an invasive type of plant, they have long been accepted, propagated and kept as ornamentals in many parts of the world today. They like to grow in soils which are maybe too acidic for any plants to grow on and which requires a little cultivation plus fertilizer. Be patient about the flowers, since they will only come out after one year from its budding.

However frail they appear to be, these plants have properties which seem to make pests and other insects repugnant for them. In fact, it is reported that it has natural oils which act as repellants, so you would need not to worry about the latter. If animals do come nearer to them, it would only do so because of the sweet smelling scent it emits.

These Indian and tropical Asian plant needs a lot of soil with organic composition, basically with natural fertilizer if you want to. To let them expand faster, cut off its old stems after the budding flowers will fade to make way for new ones. Preferably, propagation should be done when there is plenty of rain to be expected at that time, for instance early on the spring or late of fall season.

Though the prerequisites for planting these may sound difficult, they are hardy plants which requires minimum attention and care. When you have these in your garden, you can be assured that the scent alone is like no other that it seems you are in a special place. Their beautiful sight and amazing smell is just the right for the senses.
