Fun Easy DIY Projects To Do Outside

By Jaclyn Hurley

Just about everyone loves to spend time outdoors. It is wonderful to come home after a busy day at work and enjoy some fresh air and relaxation. Having a nice outdoor space also adds value to the home. Doing some fun easy DIY projects is a great way to increase the equity in the home and spend quality time with the family.

Not only does it save money but doing your own home improvements also creates a wonderful sense of achievement. This is especially true for those who may be a little nervous because they have never tackled this type of job before. There is plenty of help available in the form of books, DVD tutorials and even YouTube videos. Of course, asking an experienced friend to come over and lend a hand is also a great idea.

The key to success really is with good planning. If possible as much of the furniture as possible should be removed from the room. This makes it so much easier to work in. Strong plastic drop clothes are also necessary as they protect the floor and carpeting. The walls and wood work need to be washed with a light cleaning solution to remove dust and other debris. Any dents or rough patches should also be sanded down to provide a smooth surface.

After all the preparation the actual painting usually does not take that long. Experts recommend trimming around the doors and windows first, then tackling the large wall spaces. It is quite surprising how fast the project is finished. Most modern paints only need one coat, however new construction will need a primer plus at least two coats of paint.

Most garden or home centers carry an extensive range of paving slabs and brick. The more ambitious DIY enthusiast may want to use the smaller blocks and bricks. They should plan their design very carefully and make sure they have enough materials to complete the job. There is nothing worst than running out of an essential component right before the end.

Assembling your own furniture is also a great way to get started and save money. There are many stores that sell great pieces of household furniture that need to be put together by the home owner. Most projects require very few tools and some of the smaller ones come with a small wrench. If the item is large an extra pair of hands will be very helpful.

Once the item is assembled it will often need to be painted, stained or varnished. This presents a great opportunity for the home owner to really get creative. They can stick with the basics and add a neutral stain with several coats of varnish for a classic look. Or be a little more daring and try to do paint and stenciling. This is a wonderful idea especially for a child's room. They will love their own customized dresser or desk.

Any tools such as saws and nail guns can be rented by the day or week. The prices are reasonable and it is a lot cheaper than buying everything just for one project. Having a few knowledgeable friends over to help can also prevent a lot of frustration.
