Transform Your Property With Landscape Design

By Luisa Sharpe

Everyone needs a quiet haven to retreat to and for many people it's their garden. Creating your dream garden may seem like a daunting task but it's really not that difficult. Moreover, creative landscape design will not only transform your property and give you the perfect place to escape to after a long day. It will also increase the value of the land, whether you live in a historic mansion in Savannah GA or a modern ranch-style house in Helotes TX.

Landscape architecture is actually a more descriptive name for the art of planning the open spaces around a building. This is because it involves more than gardening. It requires the planning of every little detail, from the fences to the flower beds. The designer needs to have not only knowledge of plants but also of structural engineering, conservation, surveying and architecture.

Many architects enlist the help of a landscape architect to come up with a holistic design that includes all the buildings on the property but also the spaces between those buildings. An example of how this was done on a grand scale is the city of Brasilia, which was entirely planned and designed by an architect, an urban planner and a landscape architect. Some architects even try their hand at designing more than buildings. One such a success story is Barcelona's Park Guell, which was designed by the famously innovative architect Antoni Gaudi.

For your own home, you'll more likely work on a smaller scale. Your land and your budget will determine how complicated the design will be. It's often a good idea to start with simple modifications, such as a carefully laid out path bordered by some flower beds.

For a stunning way to transform any space, just add water. A small pond or a swimming pool can give your garden a completely new look and feel. However, if your budget doesn't allow this, a quick fix is adding a small fountain or other water feature. Even something as simple as a bird bath will turn your garden into an oasis and may attract some birds too.

If your property only has a small piece of outside land, such as a little courtyard, don't despair. There is plenty that you can do even with small spaces. For example, create racks on the walls where you can place potted plants and create a hanging garden or add shade by placing beams with creepers overhead.

The natural environment plays an important role in the direction you should choose for your garden. You need to think about the sustainability of your plans. For instance, if you live in a dry region with regular water restrictions, you won't be able to maintain a garden that resembles a tropical rainforest. Uneven, hilly terrain means that you may have to think about terraces. It's also wise to consider features that are already there, such as a creek running alongside your property or an old oak tree growing there.

To begin planning the garden of your dreams, it's a good idea to browse through landscaping magazines. They will give you ideas and even advice. A professional landscape designer will be well worth the expense too since he or she may come up with solutions you would never have thought of.
