Facts About Black Bamboo Plants In Pots

By Mattie Knight

Black bamboo is scientifically known as Phyllostachys nigra. It is a flowering plant belonging to the subfamily of Poaceae grass. The native origin of the plant is a Chinese province called Hunan. Predominance was initially restricted in China, but that is no longer the case. Today, black bamboo plants in pots are common almost everywhere in the world.

The plant grows at a very slow rate, talking several years to advance to a sizable height. That is probably one of the reasons it can be planted conveniently in pots and other kinds of vessels. A full grown plant can measure up to five meters in height and produces leaves that spread to cover a large area. Once it has achieved a given height, it is usually transplanted into the ground so that it can continue growing.

The plant is preferred because it has several desirable and beneficial features that many people want. The various benefits it offers is one among the reasons many people like it. Besides being planted, the tree can also grow on its own without human influence. When this happens, it is usually described as invasive and spreads to other areas very fast as it kills other plants.

Shade, fuel, protection against strong winds, privacy, security, timber, and food are some among the benefits provided by this plant. In Asia, natives continue to consume it as food. Some of the products made from timber derived from it include flooring products, furniture, and musical instruments. The canes can be dried to serve as fuel for warming up spaces or for cooking.

Plants grown in pots need to be supplied with water and nutrients that they would otherwise derive naturally from the soil. Failure to do that may cause them to die off. Favorable soil conditions include high fertility and slight acidity. Artificial products may be used to improve both fertility and acidity in the soil. Artificial products should not be applied in excess as to exceed the required levels of acidity. Bamboo is highly drought resistant and daily watering may not be necessary.

The size of the pot should be big and should be chosen keeping in mind that the canes will continue growing. Small pots may need to be changed often, which may cause disruption to the normal growth of the plant. The container needs to be strong and durable. It has to be able to withstand damage that may be inflicted by elements of weather such as rainfall, frost, sunshine, wind, and ice among others.

Drainage should be ensured by making holes underneath the container so that excess water can be drained. Conditions provided in pots are much better because of porosity. Porosity ensures proper aeration so that oxygen is never lacking in the soil. It also prevents water-logging.

Potted plants are easier to manage because once soil issues have been sorted out, the only thing left is to ensure proper irrigation. This can be done in the morning or evenings and does not have to be daily. Companies that sell potted plants should be in a position to offer assistance.
