The Advantages Of Handmade Tomato Cages

By Kristen Baird

For all those tomato farmers they want to have plenty of returns and to have their fruit grow without any hitches such as rot and pests feeding on the fruits. They are easy fruits to grow but require much support to maximize the return. It is for this reason that many farmers choose the inexpensive option of making themselves their own handmade tomato cages.

They are made in a vertical position. One reason for this is that it creates more space that was originally not there and also this way the fruit will be held up away from the ground. One of the reasons that one would go for this is because the fruit will be away from rodents and other pest that would otherwise reduce the fruit yield.

The materials used in making them can be found in stores in city Elmira, Ny and they are very affordable. One can also make the size that fits him best it be really tall or average or really short. Those that are purchased from the stores tend to be little smaller in size and this means that the yield will as be less than one anticipated or wished for as the yield is directly proportional to the size available.

There have been many complaints from farmers in city Elmira, Ny that grow their crop in really windy areas that they keep being blown away by the wind. They are not aware that the strength of the base is vital to having a sturdy cage. Hence the base should be made a little wider than the top so it offers maximum support to the whole structure. The wider base makes it look like a pyramid.

The material that one chooses to use to make his varies. One factor that will cause this to vary is ones budget and also how long one is wishing to use his. The cheapest material one would opt for is wood. Wood can be disadvantageous as it does rot with time. Wire mesh is the other cheap option but its downside is that it rusts hence gives a shorter duration of service to the farmer. Plastic pipes have been known to be the most durable as they do not rust nether do the rot.

Tomatoes that are grown vertically ripen faster especially those that are a little larger in size than the normal fruits. The fruits are also cleaner since they are off the ground and they are also of a better quality. In those areas with rodent infestations, slugs and crickets then the option for putting up a vertical cage since they keep the fruits safe.

One other benefit of the materials is that they are easier to work with. One might need two or more people to assist you in the making of the cage. The materials are also more durable and can be used for several seasons without having to replace them.

These projects that one does for himself are so much fun especially if he follows the guidelines given. Hiring an experienced person is also an option but this comes at a fee.
