How Childhood Trauma Therapy Can Be Helpful

By Richard Adams

Therapy during the childhood years is not something that all parents believe in. They believe that their youngsters should be running around and having a good time instead of sitting inside a therapist's office. However, it can be a serious problem which the little one is struggling from. Childhood trauma therapy is something that is a must in many cases.

A lot of adults are not even aware when kids have a problem and this is what one has to look into. There may be subtle changes. This is why one has to keep a close eye on behavioural and emotional changes that have altered over the course of time. It can be slight, but it doesn't mean that there is no problem. Some kids try to do this on purpose because they don't want anyone to find out.

This could have something to do with domestic violence, child abuse or a parent who has become abusive. Sometimes, parents become abusive after they develop an addiction. The problem is that they forget about the way in which they acted the next day. The child has a push and pull relationship with the parent.

They may feel an immense love and adoration for the parent because of the way in which they act towards them when they are sober or drug free. However, this can definitely change when they see the other side of the parent. They notice that they are different in the way in which they act. Their behaviour becomes worse over time. This can become a permanent thing.

For example, when parents get divorced and kids were never given any support, the child will often grow up thinking that this is their fault. They will grow up with shameful emotions and this will also affect their adult life. As an adult, they will also have relationship issues. They may have problems in their professional life. They can develop addictions and they can develop problems with their self esteem.

However, there may be something that the teacher is not aware of. Asking children about certain things is not going to help. They may refer the child to a school psychologist. Parents are informed as well. Unfortunately, when they know about the problem this is not something that they will follow up on, but the teacher will take note of this so she will have an idea of what is happening.

Their mood will usually be downcast and often they will become sad, while there are kids who may become angry or aggressive. If this moody behaviour is brought on suddenly, it is important that the teacher takes action. In most cases, he or she will confront them. But they will do this in a subtle way. There are also child psychologists at the school who can help in many ways.

A lot can come out in this way. For example, they will draw using dark colors. If asked to draw the family home, they will often show this without doors or windows. Family members will be shown with angry or sad looking expressions. It can tell the teacher or carer so much.
