Lakota Culture Native American Lesson Plans That Really Work

By Jennifer Allen

The main thing that you might have trouble getting through to your students with is the fact that in certain cases, these people only pass their stories on in an oral form. This type of tradition is something you'll want to highlight in any Lakota culture native American lesson plans. Otherwise, students might come away with an incomplete perception of this people's way of life.

When the Europeans started settling in this vast region, they did everything they could to erase the rich cultures that were there. This is an unfortunate tragedy that can never be undone. However, you can make sure that your students understand it so that it might never happen again.

It might be discouraging to hear all about the hardships that these people have had to go through. However, it can be nice to know that many aspects of this people's way of life have endured. This is largely due to their oral way of keeping track of things.

If you are going to be having classes during the winter, it would be good to focus those times on how these people did, in fact, tell most of their stories during these cold periods. This is because there wasn't much work that could be done outside. Everyone would be gathered around a fire for warmth, which is a great opportunity to tell your tales.

There is definitely a lot of repetitiveness when it comes to these types of stories. The reason why the same stories are repeated so often is so that all the details can sink in. This might be applicable to your teaching methods.

Some records were kept in the form of pictures, and it was very common for these to show what happened that year so that the people have an alternate way of reviewing these events and maybe looking at them in a more visual way, which can be very helpful in some cases when you're trying to visualize certain facts and figures. Many of these pictures, unfortunately, were destroyed by Europeans. This is an example of why oral traditions can be good to have.

The great thing about the histories of these people is that it goes back farther than many other cultures' histories do. This makes it very interesting to hear things from their perspective. You might be surprised by what you can learn.

Whenever you are trying to plan out your lessons, it is always best to find something that will get kids' attention grabbed so that their brains will be actively involved and engaged, and a great way to do that is by picking a story that will stand out to them because it interests them. An interesting story that will probably grab your students' attention right away is the one of the first people who journeyed to this world. As the story goes, a deity tricked them into coming too early. As a result, they were transformed into the animal we now know as the buffalo.
