“Being in the health and fitness industry for over 25 years, you see a lot of snake oils come and go,” says WWE superstar John Cena. “Like, ‘Hey, this is the next Ab Wheel!’ or ‘Hey, this is the next weight loss pill!’”
His
new weight loss program, he says, is not just another exercise fad. The
program, 10 Weeks BodyChange, is different because it not only helps
people lose weight, but also teaches them the healthy habits they’ll
need to keep the weight off.John Cena: The Hunk with a Heart
For an exercise program developed by a wrestler and bodybuilder whose ring nickname was once ‘The Doctor of Thuganomics,’ 10 Weeks BodyChange sounds surprisingly gentle: Work out twice a week in special 20-minute sessions with Cena as your personal online coach, follow his nutrition plan, and lose weight, he says (his father, for instance, lost nearly 50 pounds through the program).
Cena, 36, chatted with Parade.com about why he’s so excited about 10 Weeks BodyChange, his favorite healthy foods, and why his younger fans mean so much to him.
What’s the philosophy behind 10 Weeks BodyChange?
“It’s trying to make healthy simple. I think the health and fitness industry is just that, an industry, and it’s become over complicated and over burdened with just gimmicks and BS you honestly don’t need. And nowadays, people spend so much hard-earned money on stuff that’ll get them nowhere. If they would just get a basic education on how to be healthier and make better choices and develop better habits, then the whole country would be healthier.”
Who can benefit from the program?
“It’s geared toward everyone…Originally, I developed the program around my father because my father is 70 years old, he’s grossly overweight, has chronic asthma and mobility problems. So I kind of developed a protocol that…if he could do it, anyone could do it. My 70 year-old dad lost 50 pounds in 10 weeks, and I knew I was onto something. And then my brother’s wife, my sister-in-law, just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. She’s in her early 30s and she wanted to lose some extra baby weight. She’s been active before and needed to remain active…she lost a ton of baby weight…And then on the other end of the spectrum, [there’s] myself as an elite strength athlete. Oftentimes you try to diet and lose weight, and you see a coinciding loss of strength. But with this nutrition concept, not only do I lose weight and I feel leaner and look better, but I’m also stronger.”
What’s your typical workout routine?
“It truly depends. You know, as I age more, I try to put a lot more emphasis on warm-up and flexibility because my body’s just getting a little bit older. But my routine is…longer training sessions, longer rest periods, heavier weight. But then again, my fitness goal is to be stronger.”
Many women want to be healthy and toned but don’t necessarily want enormous muscles. What’s your advice for them?
“This program is perfect for them. [Of] my current users, over 60 percent are women and…they’re loving the product…A lot of times, and women especially, when they want to get fit, they feel very uncomfortable going into a local gym because sometimes gym atmospheres can be intimidating. We’ve totally taken that out of the equation. The workouts can be done wherever you are, you don’t need to buy any expensive machines, you don’t need to buy weights…You feel very comfortable in your own skin and you truly change your body, so it’s a wonderful product for both women and men.”
What’s your favorite workout music?
“You know what, something that just keeps a decent pace. I think it’s difficult to get moving to something that’s pretty slow. Anything that keeps a decent pace, and I mean anything. Anything that has a decent back-beat to it.”
What are your favorite healthy foods?
“I love steak, I love salmon, I love whole eggs, bacon, deli meats, nuts, beans, all kinds of vegetables. That’s usually what occupies most of my diet. I love chili, and these are all things I can have—and I can have as much as I want on the BodyChange nutrition concept.”
You’re also a rapper and hip-hop artist. Do you have any projects coming up in those areas?
“No—every once in a while someone can twist my arm to do a guest appearance. So if you really use your Google-searching abilities, you’ll probably find some of my work!…For the past I’d say six or seven years, I really focused on trying to motivate my WWE audience, the people around me, and just trying to help folks. That’s why I work with Make-A-Wish and that’s also why I developed Change Time.”
Do you have any hobbies or interests that would surprise your fans?
“I’m trying to think of something bizarre. You know what, because of the new reality show Total Divas, they kind of see most all of my life. I think my life has been pretty much an open book for anyone who’s a fan of the WWE.”
You were named the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s biggest wish-granter in history. What do your younger fans mean to you?
“It’s truly flattering…growing us as a kid, I had my heroes, and you know how you feel about your heroes. And now to be viewed by some, to be put in that position, is unreal. [I’m] involved with Make-A-Wish, and on the other end of the spectrum I’m also involved with a program called The Bucket List that helps older people, if they’ve got one wish, kind of take care of whatever they want to do. So I meet people of all ages, and there’s just a great satisfaction in seeing someone light up and truly go from struggling a little bit—or struggling a lot from some overwhelming circumstances—to just forgetting about it and enjoying themselves and being a normal person or normal kid for a day. The moral payback for that is—you can’t put that on paper.”
