Growing In Small Spaces Using Scrog Technique

By Enid Hinton

A cannabis growing method called Screen of Green is a very effective way to grow large plants in a small space. This technique is also known as Scrog, and it allows you optimal use of your grow room. Even larger strains that used to be prohibitive due to their size, can be grown easily. This method makes it possible to predict the size and to solve the problem of inadequate light penetration.

The secret is in using screen and promoting horizontal growth. Between growing and flowering periods, you should set appropriate screen just above your plants. Since the plants are still growing, the shoots will come through the holes, and you will be able to bend them on the screen and fix them in horizontal position.

You can use different materials for your mesh, for example trellis netting, chicken wire or any other material with appropriate hole pattern. The holes can be smaller or larger, as long as they are suited for their purpose. You will also need something to hold the shoots on, for example tie straps or different clips. The point is to create a flat screen of buds on the top, a nice, even canopy.

Once your plants stop growing, all flowers will be bent on the top, supplied by adequate amount of light. You just have to wait until their flowering cycle ends, and your crops will be ready for harvesting. The numerous advantages of this technique include better light effectiveness, better height control and significantly increased harvest.

SOG method is more interested in continuous production and speeding up the flowering cycles. By limiting vertical and promoting horizontal growth, this method maximizes the production of a single plant and allows better light effectiveness. The point is to grow in limited space with maximal results and controlled height.

Your screen should be appropriately fixed, because it will hold the weight of your marijuana. This means that each plant will concentrate only on growing and flowering. It doesn't matter if some stems are smaller, they will all reach the top and get enough light. Just bend each one when it gets through the mesh and fox it in horizontal position. Make sure to use feminized plants, by the way.

It is much better to use only Sativa strains for this type of growth. Indica strains have much stronger stems and cannot be bent so easily. Besides, Sativa strains have higher internodal distance. When approximately sixty percent of your mesh is filled, it is time to change the photo period to 12/12 hours. Flowering will cover the rest of the mesh.

There are some other tricks you may use to maximize the harvest. For example, traditional pruning method requires removing the entire central shoot, and this creates two new ones on this place. If you remove only eighty percent of the central shoot, when the plant is still young, you will get three to eight new shoots on the place of cutting. This will make your harvest even more attractive.
