Fire Suppression Systems And Feeling The Burn

By Brian Robinson

Nobody intends to get hit by disaster and nobody wants to be struck down by one. But disasters can happen to anyone, at any place, and at any time, either through sheer bad luck or through the deliberate intent of another party. As such, it is best to prepare for one beforehand. Which is why having fire suppression systems NYC just makes sense.

Fires can destroy and end lives. Fires can destroy businesses and livelihoods. In a densely packed city where buildings are close together, having a system for containment may not just save one building, but a whole street full of them.

Fires have ruined entire cities throughout history. Knowledge has been lost to the flames, the heat turning irreplaceable texts and tomes to ash. Beyond the practical reasons for having the means to prevent the spread of a fire, there is the social and historical responsibility. Culturally relevant relics can become tinder and be turned to cinders.

Being ready is always better than being caught off guard. Having a suppression system in place means that if there is an inferno, you are ready for it. But being careful to not have one break out in the first place is. Combustible or flammable materials or chemicals should be stored safety. Electrical wiring should comply with local safety standards and guidelines. Having the means to combat an inferno is all well and good, but making it redundant is even better.

A fire suppression system is part of most commercial buildings. There are many different kinds, using different agents. But the main focus of them is that they put the flames out and isolate a blaze in a certain area and keep it from spreading.

The most basic form device is the extinguisher, generally required by law to be present in many times over in most commercial buildings. There are many different kinds of extinguisher, each with unique chemical mixtures suited to different fuel or heat sources. The extinguisher spews foam to snuff out flames.

Sprinklers are another widely used method. A sprinkler works by detecting a fire, either through smoke or through a significant spike in the temperature, and then gushes water about. Most commercial buildings come outfitted with sprinklers and they are generally quite effective when fitted and maintained properly.

Some buildings or areas may contain machinery that is sensitive to water. In those areas, gas suppression systems can be used. Instead of spreading water, a gas system spreads inert gases to combat a fire. The main drawback is that system can cause injury or even death, as one of the main methods of a gas system is to reduce the amount of oxygen in a room.

Choosing the right means of containment can take a lot of forethought and deliberation. Some systems will work better than others depending on the area in question and fuel source. A commercial building can be fitted with multiple types of systems for the many different areas that is has. Having the wrong one in place is bad enough, not having one is even worse.
