The Controversy Behind Psychic Abilities Of Mediums

By Shirley Scott

Since the earliest recorded history of humans, man has always been keen on maintaining a connection with the deceased. Today, believers look to a practice called mediumship to allow themselves to be read by mediums who claim to have psychic abilities. A San Diego medium can link the world of the living and the dead to provide closure to people who have dealt with tragic losses or to simply help them cope with grief.

In certain cultures, families reunite for specific times in the year to celebrate death anniversaries of loved ones. There are tons of preparations preceding these celebrations. Some cook massive feasts while others hold novenas or prayer vigils days or weeks before the anniversary. These celebrations are done in the spirit of hope and faith.

Our close relationships with the dead highlight how much we value those who have gone before us. This is primarily because of our beliefs in the afterlife or other concepts of a similar nature. Since most of the human population has its roots deeply grounded in religious beliefs, even now, many of us believe that there is a place we all go to after death.

The afterlife is commonly interpreted differently in beliefs around the world. However, the central idea of an afterlife remains to be quite universal. Believers trust in the psychic abilities of mediums as they try to establish a line of communication with the spirits. Since no scientific or concrete can back up whatever takes place in a single session, these practices are considered highly controversial.

Many skeptics like to point out the absurdity of this practice. Still, others claim to have successfully spoken to their deceased loved ones during sessions with a medium. What can definitely be agreed upon is that all this debate and controversy only highlights our deeply rooted traditions that have anything to do with the dead.

Psychics mostly rely on their intuition when they make readings for a client, while mediums take these intuitive abilities one step further. By harnessing this energy, they conjure up the spirits surrounding a client and deliver messages from the living to the dead. Since none of these are founded on facts, it is rather impossible to give someone appropriate advice on how to find the best mediums.

You mainly have to rely on your sense of trust and intuition to determine whether that reader is authentic or not, especially since you can only imagine how easy it is to fake mediumship or psychic abilities. An interesting effect that frauds take advantage of is the Forer Effect. A major thing is they start off by getting gullible clients to give out important personal information before the session has even begun.

After getting the information, frauds then build claims around these that are applicable to almost anyone. With enough experience, they can make clients trust every word they are saying by spinning it around personal tragedies that happen to almost everyone. Physical clues such as wedding rings or subtle nods here and there also help psychics indicate events in the lives of their clients that are most personal to them.

It actually takes some serious skill and tons of experience to be able to pull this off. Because of the psychological skills that psychics have developed over their careers, some are actually capable of spotting clues in the demeanor of their clients that ultimately help them determine facts about other people. Still, those who believe in the supernatural should not be ashamed. If practices like these help people cope with grief, then perhaps they are actually harmless and rather beneficial.
