Turn Your Thumb Green With These Gardening Tips

By Johnathan Black

Gardening can be an essential part of beautifying your home or supplementing you, your family, or your career. However, understanding it and buying the right gardening equipment can be tricky. Here are some tips that you can use to help you properly and successfully grow a garden like a pro.

Be sure to water your garden daily. Without daily water, your garden may quickly turn sour. If the idea of pulling out a hose daily is too much for you to stomach, consider installing some sort of sprinkler system. There is a cost, but it can save a lot of headaches and actually pay for itself via a healthy crop!

If you learn that your soil has a high amount of alkaline, mix some used coffee grounds into it. This is a simple way to replenish your soil with acid. Improving the pH of your soil will make your vegetables and greens taste even better!

Create an illusion of space. If you have a small garden, use color to create an illusion of more space. A background of blues, grays, pinks and mauves will create a misty effect, giving you the feeling of depth. If you use a bright color in the foreground such as red, this will emphasize the effect, as it draws the eye forward.

Although railroad ties may look very nice in your garden, the chemicals in them, are thought to be hazardous and toxic to the health of the garden, so consider alternatives. Natural wood is easy to find and will add a beautiful touch to your garden.

Try "boiling" weeds to get rid of them. Boiling water is a safe herbicide which won't damage your garden or your body. Although this method is organic, it does pose a danger to your plants. This can cause enough damage to the roots of any plant to kill it.

So you have finally decided you want to plant a garden. One of the first things you will want to do is to find out if you have good or bad soil. The only sure way you will know this is to have the soil tested. Many nurseries will test your soil for a nominal fee. Soil with poor health will produce yellow, sickly-looking plants. By having your soil tested, you will know if your soil needs nutrients added or if you need to make adjustments to the pH of the soil.

So, as you can see, organic gardening is more than just professional organic gardening. It really can be a relaxing hobby or activity if you want it to be. You should feel a bit better and ready to start growing a better organic garden using your newly-found knowledge of this type of gardening.
